A journey on the Rupununi River through the Kanaku mountains of southern Guyana. Unlocking the mysteries of this pristine rainforest region and witness exotic flora and fauna, majestic rivers and waterfalls. Visit indigenous Indian communities as well as Rupununi's cattle ranches. Accommodation varying from private rooms with bath, to our fabulous hammock camps. You will be surrounded by a world undisturbed by civilization and its stresses. Fishing for Peacock Bass, Arawana, Biara, and giant catfish. Photo the endangered Giant River Otter, Anacondas, Tapirs, and maybe the elusive Jaguar. Discover the true meaning of life!
Daily Itinerary
Day 1: Fly to Georgetown
Scheduled international flights to Georgetown, Guyana. (avg. 4 hours from Miami, 6 hours from NYC Or Toronto, 10-12 hours from Europe via Barbados or Trinidad and Tobago). Private transfers and night at the 5-star Meridien Pegasus hotel in Georgetown. Dinner on your own.
Day 2: Annai
After an early morning flight, arrive at Annai, and after breakfast at Rock View Eco Resort, transfer to boats for an first day's travel down the Rupununi river. From the beginning, black caiman, monkeys, otters and a variety of birds will present wonderful photo opportunities.
Day 3: Rewa Village
We continue our journey down the Rupununi River to Rewa Village, about 60 miles from Annai at the confluence of the Rewa and Rupununi River. Here we'll stop for an opportunity to interact with its friendly and hospitable inhabitants, meet the Tauchau (chief), and to talk and trade. This isolated community of 200 Macuxi Indians is our last contact with other humans for the next week.
Day 4-6: Rewa River
For the next three days we'll explore up the Rewa River, uninhabited and isolated, this river is a paradise for birders and fishermen, and will present innumerable photo opportunities of flora and fauna. Treks into the forest on specially cut trails will allow you to experience the rainforest at its best. Do bring lots of film. We will be changing camps daily.
Day 7-8: Corona Falls
Corona Falls is a magnificent water falls on the Rewa, Isolation and a lack of commercial value, has allowed it to retain its pristine beauty. Fishing is for Pakoo, a fish that travels upriver to spawn. Incredibly strong, it lives in the fast running water of the rapids and presents a serious challenge to fishermen and their tackle. Day 9-10: Quitaro River
Our journey continues up the Quitaro River. Changes in the forest canopy can be observed, but the flora and fauna continues relentlessly.
Day 11: Rainforest Trek
From Quitaro Landing we begin a trek through the rainforest. Accompanied by a new team, this trek through the Kanaku mountains is a journey to remember.
Day 12: Rainforest-Savannah-Dadanawa Ranch.
Our journey continues through changing terrain as the forest gives way to the savannas, from the cool towering canopy of forest to the big sky country. A 4x4 drive to Dadanawa will return us to civilization.
Day 13: Dadanawa
Accommodations is in a weathered ranch house, facing the savannas and offers a panoramic view of the Kanaku mountains. Here cattle are still worked the age old way from horseback and cowboys ride barefoot in the stirrup.You can ride with them, or visit ancient rock carvings. fish, go birding, or simply relax in this big sky country.
Day 14: Lethem and Manari Ranch
Breakfast. The journey to Lethem is an off road adventure on savanna roads along side the Kanaku mountains. Passing through Shulinab village, the only settlement of the Macuxi tribe in the south savannas. In Lethem you'll have an opportunity to buy local handicraft including fabulous hand made Wapishana Hammocks and Wai Wai ornaments.
Day 15: Fly to Georgetown
Breakfast. Fly to Georgetown, transfer to International airport for flight to home.
